JPG versus PNG

JPG is designed for photographic images and uses lossy compression. PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency, which makes it better for logos, interface graphics and images that need a transparent background.

Converting an existing JPG to PNG does not restore detail that JPG compression already removed. The PNG may also be larger because it stores the converted pixels without the same lossy compression.

If the goal is transparency, converting JPG to PNG alone will not remove the existing background because JPG has already flattened every pixel. Use a background-removal or transparent-image tool first, then save the edited result as PNG.

Frequently asked questions

No, PNG is a lossless format, so converting from JPG to PNG doesn't lose any additional image quality, though it also won't recover detail the original JPG compression already removed.

PNG uses lossless compression, which generally produces larger files than JPG's lossy compression, especially for photos with a lot of detail or noise.

Converting to PNG does not restore lost quality

A JPG has already discarded some image information. Saving it as PNG can improve compatibility for editing workflows, but it cannot recover detail removed by the original JPEG compression.

  • Use PNG when you need lossless re-saving after this point.
  • Do not expect a smaller file; PNG photos are often larger than JPG.
  • Transparency cannot be reconstructed automatically from a normal JPG background.
