Background Remover
Automatically remove the background from a photo using an AI segmentation model that runs on your device — best results with people/portraits.
How to use the background remover
- Upload a photo, ideally with a person as the main subject.
- Click Remove background — the AI model loads and runs in your browser (the first run takes a few seconds).
- Download the result as a transparent PNG.
Features
- Uses Google's MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation model, a real on-device AI model, not a fake filter
- Best suited to photos with a person in them, not arbitrary objects
- Runs entirely on your device — the photo itself isn't uploaded to a server (only the segmentation model files load from a public CDN)
- Transparent PNG output, ready to place on any background
Tips for a cleaner background removal
Background removal works best when the subject is clearly separated from the background, the image is reasonably sharp and the person is not heavily cropped. Fine hair, transparent objects and busy backgrounds can require extra cleanup in an image editor after the automatic cut-out.
Use the transparent PNG output when you need to place the subject over a new colour or design. PNG preserves transparency, while saving the result as JPG would replace transparent areas with a solid background.

When automatic background removal works best
High contrast between the subject and the background usually produces the cleanest edge. Hair, transparent objects, shadows and colours that closely match the background are harder cases, so inspect those areas at 100% before using the result in a final design.
- Use a well-lit photo with clear subject edges.
- Export as PNG when you need transparency.
- For product photos, check reflective and semi-transparent areas after removal.
