Application Photo Requirements: Passport, FPSC and Visa Uploads
A portal can reject a perfectly good portrait because the file is too large, the wrong format, the wrong pixel dimensions or the wrong crop. The safest workflow is to separate measurable file rules from visual identity rules, then verify both against the authority that will receive the application.

Quick comparison of current source-backed requirements
| Application | Measurable photo requirement | What ToolNova can check |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan online passport | JPG/JPEG, 350 × 467 pixels, maximum 3 MB, white background | Type, size, exact pixels, approximate background |
| FPSC general recruitment | Recent passport-size photo, JPG/JPEG, less than 30 KB | Type and file-size limit |
| Pakistan visa | 45 mm high × 35 mm wide, white background | 35:45 aspect ratio and approximate background |
| UAE ICP personal photo | Recent ICAO-style photo, 3.5 × 4.5 cm / 35–40 mm width, white background | 35:45 aspect ratio and approximate background |
| Schengen visa | ICAO-compliant photo; official EU mission guidance commonly uses 45 × 35 mm and a light background | 35:45 helper crop and approximate light background; verify destination consulate |
KB size and pixel size are different checks
A 350 × 467 image describes dimensions, not storage size. Two images with identical pixel dimensions can have very different KB sizes because JPEG quality, scene detail and metadata change compression efficiency. That is why an FPSC photo can fail the 30 KB rule even when it looks small on screen, while a Pakistan online-passport photo can fail because it is not exactly 350 × 467 pixels even if it is well under 3 MB.
When a portal publishes both dimensions and a maximum file size, check dimensions first and compression second. Repeatedly compressing the wrong-shaped image wastes quality without solving the actual requirement.
Physical dimensions do not automatically define one pixel size
Visa and identity guidance often uses millimetres because the final requirement is based on a physical photograph or biometric framing. A 35 × 45 mm photo can be represented by many digital pixel dimensions depending on print resolution. If an authority does not publish a digital pixel size, do not assume that 350 × 450 or 700 × 900 pixels is an official rule.
ToolNova therefore treats 35:45 as an aspect-ratio check where appropriate. Its 700 × 900 helper export is a convenient digital crop, not a claim that every visa portal requires those pixels.
Background checking is only an estimate
A browser can sample edge pixels and estimate whether the background is mostly white or light. That is useful for catching an obvious coloured wall or dark background. It cannot reliably decide whether shadows, hair, clothing, facial position or lighting meet biometric standards. A green background score is therefore not a biometric approval.
Visual rules still need human review
Authorities can require a recent likeness, full face, open eyes, neutral expression, no hats or sunglasses, and a clear face without shadows or reflections. UAE ICP explicitly references ICAO-style standards, while Schengen guidance requires an ICAO-compliant photo. Those checks are more complex than file metadata and should be compared with the official examples or instructions for the exact service you are using.
A safer preflight workflow
- Open the official application page and copy its current file requirements.
- Check accepted file type first.
- Check exact pixel dimensions if the authority publishes them.
- Check the KB/MB limit.
- Check crop/aspect ratio and background guidance.
- Preview the final file after any resize or compression.
- Confirm visual rules such as face position, expression and recency manually.
- Keep the original photo so you can create a new version if the portal's rules change.
Use the Application Photo & Document Checker
ToolNova's preflight checker applies the measurable rules above, links back to the source for official presets, and can fix common image-format, crop and file-size problems in your browser.
